POLICE USED GAS AND WATER CANONS TO STOP TRADE UNIONS
Police sprayed pepper gas and water canons at thousands of protesters, trying to stop a march on Parliament by workers protesting government-proposed legislation that they say will strip them of their rights. Government once more violated fundamental right to peaceful demonstration and assembly by using extreme violence.
Members of trade UNION confederations (DİSK & KESK) had gathered in the capital Ankara and vowed to reach Parliament in defiance of laws that bar demonstrations near the assembly building.
Police blocked a main road leading to the building with a line of vans and water canons, and used pepper gas and pressurized water to push the demonstrators back.
Parliament is debating a package of assorted legislation which includes precarious working conditions.
If passed, the legislation would allow employers to relocate some workers against their will, make workers – not employers – financially responsible for health benefit premiums, and allow employers to employ interns and apprentices for four months without pay.
Trade UNIONs also say the changes would give the government leeway to use a special fund designed to fight unemployment for other purposes.
Demonstrations leading by DİSK, KESK, TTB and TMMOB are going on even there are plenty of detainees and injured.
