Call from Intellectual about May Day in Taksim Square
Intellectuals called governorship of İstanbul and the government authorities related in the banning over Taksim Square.
114 intellectuals including the artists, journalists and academicians signed under the text of call.
The declaration of May 1 as public holiday is interpreted as a gain in the text saying that “Taksim square identified with the May Day since 1976. For this reason, we demand opening of Taksim Square for May Day celebrations. We don’t behave stubbornly, we demand our natural right back. Taksim square is open to all kind of demonstrations except May Day. 36 people have been murdered there in 1977 by the dark forces. For this reason, Taksim Square has a very special historical meaning for democratic forces of Turkey as well as working classes.”
“Squares and places in the cities find a place in collective memories of the people. Opening of Taksim Square after 30 years banning will contribute to the peace and negotiation processes.”
