Taksim Square opened to the police
Workers cannot celebrate May 1 in Taksim Square, but it is open to police. The square was closed to traffic yesterday for the celebrations at the anniversary of the police organization.
Following the statement of İstanbul Governor Muammer Güler that Taksim Square was not appropriate for the May 1 celebrations, the square opened to the police.
At the 164. anniversary of Turkish Police Organization, Taksim Square was closed to traffic just hours after Güler’s statement. Although Güler said that the square was not appropriate for May 1 celebrations, thousands of police participated in the march yesterday. Many people reacted against police marched in the square while the people who wanted to celebrate May 1 in Taksim in the previous years had been attacked by the police
